Who We Are
About Lumen
Lumen Atelier is a Portland, Oregon-based non-profit photography school and gallery. Founded in 1989, we are accredited by NASAD and serve more than 4,000 students each year through classes, workshops, exhibitions, and our community darkroom.
Mission
To make photographic education and a community darkroom available to everyone in the Pacific Northwest, regardless of prior experience or means.
History
Lumen was founded in 1989 as a single-room darkroom co-op above a hardware store on SE Stark. We moved to our current building in 2003 and added the gallery program in 2007.
In 2023 we completed a 4,000-square-foot expansion to add the calibrated Digital Print Lab and the Alternative Process Classroom.
Accreditation & Licensing
Lumen Atelier is a 501(c)3 non-profit and an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
Staff & Board
Lumen is run by a small staff and a working board of trustees drawn from the Portland arts and creative-industries community.
